Ivan Yarygin Memorial (Иван Ярыгин) is one of the toughest international events outside of the World Championships and Olympic Games.
Two time Olympic Gold, four time World Gold Yarygin was tragically killed in a car accident in 1997. The event honored in his namesake takes place in Krasnoyarsk Siberia Russia, where he had lived for many years.

WOMEN'S FREESTYLE 57KG
57kg Preview/Prediction: Olympic and World Champion Helen Maroulis of the US headlines this weight class. World Bronze Medalist of Russia Olga Khoroshavtseva holds two Yarygin titles, one at 50kg and one at 53kg and now moves 2 weight classes up.
57KG UPDATES: Helen visibly looked stronger and makes the finals with a few scares against Chumikova in qualification bout. As expected Olga Khoroshavtseva will face Helen in the finals tomorrow.
57KG FINAL RECAP: Unfortunately Khoroshavtseva was tremendously sick and withdrew from finals allowing Helen to grab her first ever Yarygin gold, to become just the eighth American Women to win the prestigious event! My virtual student Bolartuya Khurelkhuu pinned her way to bronze and will meet Helen in February at exhibition bout in Texas.

WOMEN'S FREESTYLE 59KG
59kg Preview/Prediction: Amina Tandelova is one of the most exciting athletes in this bracket willing to take risks and throw (photo above). She was Euro Cadet Champion but that was 2019 and will be interesting to see her against these veteran athletes.
59KG UPDATES: Zhargalma Tsyrempilova defeated Tandelova and will meet Tatyana Kolesnik of Azerbaijan in the finals tomorrow.
59KG FINAL RECAP: Tatyana Kolesnik took out Tsyrempilova to get Azerbaijan Women a Yarygin Gold!

WOMEN'S FREESTYLE 65KG
65kg Preview/Prediction: Forrest Molinari of the US leads the charge here with 3x Yarygin Champion Maria Kuznetsova of Russia on the same side of the bracket. On the other side of the bracket is U23 Finalist Dinara Kudaeva Salikhova of Russia.
65KG UPDATES: All USA Final as Forrest Molinari will meet Emma Bruntil tomorrow.
65KG FINAL RECAP: Emma Bruntil takes out favorite Forrest Molinari in the all USA final! Bruntil lost to Molinari 4-0 and 9-1 in last year's World Team Trials series, so nice turnaround to become just the 7th American Women to win Yargin.

WOMEN'S FREESTYLE 72KG
72kg Preview/Prediction: Another small bracket with two pools of 3 athletes including Marina Surovtseva of Russia. She was U23 Euro Finalist and may end up facing Davaanasan Enkh Amar who was in the Bronze Medal bout in Oslo and took 5th.
72KG UPDATES: Davaanasan of Mongolia advances to the finals to square off against Kseniia Burakova of Russia tomorrow.
72KG FINAL RECAP: Burakova with the upset first period fall of Davaanasan!

WOMEN'S FREESTYLE 76KG
76kg Preview/Prediction: Elmira Syzdykova of Kazakhstan won an Olympic Bronze medal in 2016 and looks to be the leader of a slew of Mongolians and Russian women, seeking to knock her off the top.
76KG UPDATES: As expected, Syzdykova advanced to the finals and will meet Dzibuk of Belarus.
76KG FINAL RECAP: Syzdykova won by superiority 15-4 with 30 seconds left over Dzibuk. Great bout with some excellent throws by both women.

MEN'S FREESTYLE 57KG
57kg Preview/Prediction: With no Olympic Champion Zaur Uguev, the victor seems wide open for any of the Dagestani wrestlers including Yarygin Finalist Ahmed Idrisov and World Team member Abubakar Mutaliev, plus Nachyn Mongush who was leading Uguev 6-2, but finished second at Russia Olympic Trials. Previous Yarygin and Euro Champion Azamat Tuskaev may be front leader here.
57KG UPDATES: Ahmed Idrisov will meet Ramiz Gamzatov in the finals. Gamzatov looked great and shut out Tuskaev 4-0, who I had winning it.
57KG FINAL RECAP: Ramiz Gamzatov earns 5-2 victory over Ahmed Idrisov while Azmat Tuskaev and Musa Mekhtikhanov earned bronze medals.

MEN'S FREESTYLE 61KG
61kg Preview/Prediction: The front running headline of this event WAS Olympic Bronze Medalist and 57kg World Champion Thomas Gilman of the United States potentially meeting 61kg World Champion Abasgadzhi Magomedov of Dagestan. The last time they met 3 years ago Abasgadzhi pinned Gilman and hit a beautiful misdirection that I teach, but Gilman did not weigh in and unfortunately will not see this one. Abasgadzhi is clear favorite here.
61KG UPDATES: As expected, Abasgadzhi Magomedov cruised his way to finals and will meet Junior World Bronze Fedor Baltuev tomorrow.
61KG FINAL RECAP: Excellent finals as Abasgadzhi battled to the wire with Baltuev in a 9-8 victory. Zelimkhan Abakarov and Abdurakhman Rasulov each won bronze.

MEN'S FREESTYLE 65KG
65kg Preview/Prediction: Love Joey McKenna of the US, but he will have his hands full with 2x World Bronze Akhmed Chakaev, plus Abdulmahzid Kudiev and Ramazan Ferzaliev all of Dagestan. Chakaev has the experience to win it including 8 Yarygin medals, 2 which were gold. He will also see Nachyn Kuular who is always a throwing threat. Chakaev just beat him recently, plus we'll see previous Yarygin Champion Muslim Sadulaev up from 61kg, World Bronze Tulga Tumur Ochir of Mongolia and previous Yarygin Champion representing Russia, Niurgun Skriabin now of Belarus.
65KG UPDATES: Such a tough weight at this event. Mamedov defeated Abdurakmanov 5-0 to advance to the finals while Ramazan Ferzaliev defeats McKenna, Chakaev and Ibragimov to advance to the bottom half of finals.
65KG FINAL RECAP: Ferzaliev lead/battled to the end but Mamedov scored with 10 seconds to go for gold. McKenna knocked off Chakaev in repechage but fell to Ibragimov for bronze.

MEN'S FREESTYLE 70KG
70kg Preview/Prediction: A slew of Americans are set to compete including James Green & Alec Pantaleo. Rumor had World Champion of North Ossetia David Baev, but he's at 74kg! Kurban Shiraev is a 2 time Yargin winner who defeated Baev last year and Olympic Gold Soslan Ramanov 2 years ago and gets Green out the gate. Anzor Zakuev might have the most skill and explosiveness but Shiraev should win in one of the second deepest field at Yarygin.
70KG UPDATES: Kurban Shiraev and James Green qualification bout did not disappoint. Shiraev knocked off Green in a come from behind 10-7 victory (See full bout here), yet another World Medalist, however Victor Rassadin exacted revenge on his 8-1 Yarygin final loss last year and defeated him 7-6 in the 1/8 final in an exciting final sequence lasting more than a minute with 8 points being exchanged. Pantaleo was disappointing after controlling 5 minutes of the bout and giving up a solid lead, opening a clear path for Anzor Zakuev to meet Rassadin in the finals tomorrow.
70KG FINAL RECAP: Victor Rassadin finally earns a Yarygin gold over Zakuev, 10-4. Shiraev and Zhen daev took home bronze.

MEN'S FREESTYLE 74KG
74kg Preview/Prediction: With the announcement that Olympic Champion Zaurbek Sidakov of North Ossetia, Dagestani's World Cup Gold Razambek Zhamalov and World Champion Magomed Kurbanaliev will miss the event, it leaves the competition wide open for 2x World Champion Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov but the deepest field at Yarygin. Jason Nolf and Josh Shields of the US will make an impact as will most recent World Bronze Timur Bizhoev who won over Gazi in wrestle off, Cherman Valiev has win over Baev. David Baev making his debut at 74kg but I fear too much over 70kg for him.
74KG UPDATES: Loaded and stacked and Jason Nolf pinned World bronze Timur Bizhoev to advance to finals. Gazi had a tough run defeating Suchkov and Baev before losing to Valiev who will meet Nolf for gold.
74KG FINAL RECAP: Outstanding bout by Valiev and Nolf, with Nolf pushing the action, 32 leg attacks in 6 minutes. That averages 1 every 11.25 seconds! Valiev prevailed 6-0 victory however as only 2 of Nolf's 32 attacks actually made contact with the leg. Full analysis HERE.

MEN'S FREESTYLE 79KG
79kg Preview/Prediction: Akmed Usmanov of Dagestan is one of the strongest competitors at 79kg having World Cup title and last year's Yarygin title. Alex Dieringer of the US is down at this weight class which may be a good thing or bad thing if he shrunk himself too small. The rest of the field as expected is strong full of Dagestanis including 4x Yarygin Champion Akmed Gadzhimagomedov, World Bronze, Junior World Gold, U23 World Gold Gadzhi Nabiev, plus Asulev, and Manilov. Usmanov last lost to Malik Shavaev at Nationals, but will bounce back for title.
79KG UPDATES: Another killer weight with Usmanov losing (again) to Shavaev, this time 5-2 and Nabiev falling to Valiev 3-2. Dieringer then lost to Valiev in 1/2 final and Shavaev advances to finals defeating Zainidinov.
79KG FINAL RECAP: Shavaev's run ends and fell to Valiev for gold. Ringer was leading virtually entire bronze medal bout and fell in final 10 seconds to Nabiev.

MEN'S FREESTYLE 86KG
86kg Preview/Prediction: Dagestani and 2x Yarygin Champion Dauren Kurugliev is the strongest 86kg in Russia, but not even the #1 Olympic Bronze Artur Naifonov of North Ossetia will be there. Zahid Valencia of the US is an interesting prospect but do not believe he is there yet to defeat with a boring Kurugliev.
86KG UPDATES: Dauren Kurugliev dominated his way to the finals. Zahid Valencia wrestled well but fell in 1/2 finals.
86KG FINAL RECAP: Kurugliev quietly dominated 6-0 victory over Amannula Rasulov. Zahid Valencia of the US ended the Yarygin Bronze Medal Drought after Alex Dieringer and Joey McKenna dropped their bouts.

MEN'S FREESTYLE 92KG
92kg Preview/Prediction: Front leader here in a very small bracket is the exciting and explosive Azamat Zakuev, bigger brother to Anzor who is competing at 70kg.

92KG FINAL RECAP:

MEN'S FREESTYLE 97KG
97kg Preview/Prediction: 2x Olympic Finalist and Champion Kyle Snyder has a busy competition schedule ahead of him with Iran vs US Feb 14 and best of 3 Jden Cox March 17. Snyder headlines this weight class, but his rival Abdulrashid Sadulaev will not be there despite having just visited Sadulaev in Dagestan a couple weeks ago. Snyder should see his way thru his primary competition of World Bronze Alikhan Zhabrailov.
97KG UPDATES: No surprise as Snyderman emerges from the top half and will meet Musaev of Russia in the finals tomorrow. Musaev battled his way through a pretty tough field defeating Aliev, Erik, Almentay, and Odikadze.
97KG FINAL RECAP: Kyle Snyder wins his third Yarygin Title, the first to do so. Georgian veteran Odikadze of Turkey takes home a bronze.

MEN'S FREESTYLE 125KG
125kg Preview/Prediction: Love seeing Shamil Shiripov and Magomed Magomedov go at it in Dagestan training. Sharipov's talent and skill is only foreshadowed by his inability to hang on late in bouts. I like Sharipov here irregardless, despite the presence of Americans Ty Walz and Derek White.
125KG UPDATES: Major shake up here as Sharipov loses to Goloev and advances to finals. Khizriev defeats Boltin of Kazakhstan 9-7 on the top final. Russian heavyweight woes continue as there is still no clear cut candidate to round out their team...
125KG FINAL RECAP: Some controversy in the end as Khizriev takes Goloev from standing to mat, but he landed on his back and never recovered and Goleov was grabbing singlet. The action allowed Khizriev to take the lead in the final seconds. Goleov challenged but lost.
